A Personal experience:
When I was a Finance Executive at EDS responsible for Europe, Asia & Latin America, I bought my first small company. Turnover was below £500k and we had a staff of 16. With my qualifications and experience in well-run multinationals, I negotiated the asking price down by 20.7%. The bank having seen the Business case gave me a loan without restrictive clauses. My plan was to spend Saturdays supervising the running of this small company…
Trouble started immediately. The Manger and other staff started calling for directions. Manager and deputy were glorified doers and not leaders. Worse, when the local authorities started changing the goal posts, revenue dropped drastically and so did the margin.
Best Practices from the major multi-nationals came to our rescue.
Simple (I didn’t want a sledge hammer to crack a nut) but comprehensive processes were introduced and documented. All options for the future and competition were analysed (planning), and we tweaked our strategic direction ahead of the competition (competitive advantage). A Skilled Manager was brought in whose compensation was linked to performance. Gradually we built up the brand name, revenue stream and improved the margin (and also my game of golf).
After five years I sold the business as my European and Global responsibilities took me to Brussels and then to Stockholm.
